What is Prescription compounding and why would you need compounding?

Prescription Compounding is science of creating a specific "Medicinal Compound" that is right for you.  Prescription Compounding is where we create medicine in a form that meets your individual needs and of course your doctor's requirements.  Compounding is something like having a commercial manufacturer onsite, except its more like having a Prescription "Tailor".   We customize the medication in a form that will make it the easiest and most effective for you to take.

Compounding provides the maximum flexibility in HOW a medicine is administered.  Many times a person is unable to take or swallow a pills or tablets, yet that is the only form in which the medication is provided from the manufacturer.  Compounding allows the pharmacist to create a liquid (or suspension) that is not available from the commercial drug company, and thus making it much easier for the patient to take the medicine.  Compounding allows the Pharmacist to alter  or create medication regarding its form or even taste.

Compounding is not limited to commercial medications.   We can also create compounds from our natural or homeopathic supplements.

There can be many reasons for needing customized medications.  Reasons range from a specific form not being commercially available to the instability (freshness) of a product.  It is important to note that not all compounds can be created in certain forms, and it is very important to include the doctor in selecting alternative forms of delivery for a medication.

Reasons for Compounding Variations (ways we can prepare compounds):
  • Medication or form is not commercially available
  • Short-life span (or shelf-life) of the product
  • Stability or freshness problems
  • Discontinued products or forms
  • Combination products
  • Form not available because it is not economical for the manufacturer
  • Patients with sensitivity issues, allergies, or special needs:  preservative free, dye free, lactose intolerant preparations
  • Patients with difficulty in taking or using medication in common forms, such as difficulties taking injections, pills, suspensions, nasal sprays, suppositories, or creams
  • Preparation of natural or homeopathic supplements
  • Capsules (Standard or Timed Released)
  • Suspensions
  • Syrups
  • Powers
  • Creams (Topical, Rectal, Vaginal, etc.)
  • Non-Aerosol Sprays (Nasal or Oral)
  • Drops (for Eyes or Ears)
  • Lotions
  • Mouthwashes
  • Ointments
  • Popsicles
  • Inhalation Solutions
  • Suppositories (Rectal or Vaginal)
  • Enemas
  • Dental Preparations
  • Discontinued forms or products

We will be happy to discuss any of your special needs regarding medications.  It is possible that through "Compounding" we can meet your needs and make it the easiest and most effective method for taking your medication(s).

Compounding is also important today for many new medications that are on the market, such as Viagra
